In Europe, more than two thirds of employed people work in the service sector, which is growing steadily to the detriment of industry and agriculture. Employment in agriculture remains above 10% in just three countries and above 20% only in Romania. Across Europe, employment in the public sector varies from 14 to 34%.

• In 2009, Romania was the only EU 27 country where agriculture and industry accounted for over 50% of employment. Services are prevalent in all other countries.
• In Slovakia, more than 50% of men worked in industry in 2009.
