European Union countries have reached a high to very high level of development and are ranked in the top third of United Nations countries worldwide. However, they are experiencing a variety of economic situations, depending on their social model, natural resources and history. In the coming decades, Europe may face a demographic challenge resulting from an ageing population and low natural growth.

• 2008 EU 27 population: 500 million.
• Norway and Australia have the two highest HDI values in the world. EU 27 member states are ranked between 5th (Ireland) and 58th (Bulgaria) out of 169 countries.
• The EU 27 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per inhabitant rose from €19,100 in 2000 to €25,100 in 2008, and then fell back to €23,600 in 2009.
